This teaching and learning package supports key stage 1 History QCA Unit 3.  There are also links with PSHE and healthy eating.

Activity 1: Cedric and Effie go to the Seaside

Learning objectives:

  • To encourage the development of investigation, speaking and listening and thinking skills
  • To explore differences between the past and the present.


Activity:

  1. Starter activity: Ask the class to imagine that they are going on a trip to the seaside. What would they wear and why? What would they want to take with them?
  2. Show the photograph titled Children at the Seaside. Ask the class to describe what Cedric and Effie are wearing. How is it different to what you would wear to the beach today?
  3. Collect photographs showing the seaside and family days out from different periods of time including the present day and from the 1950s to the 1980s. As a class, make a display of these drawings in a time line using relevant vocabulary to explain differences.

Activity 2: Seaside Feasts

Learning objectives:

  • To encourage the development of investigation, speaking and listening and thinking skills
  • To explore differences between the past and the present.

Activity

  1. Ask student what they would put in their lunchbox if they were going on a trip to the seaside. Pupils could draw and label the foods.
  2. Class discussion: What foods have children selected and why? Which ones are healthy choices.
  3. Look at 1900 Picnic Meal Suggestions[doc].How is this picnic the same / different? Which is healthier? Prior to a school trip, which will involve a packed lunch, organise a tasting session of foods old and new.
  4. As follow up work, you could organise a tasting session of old and new picnic foods or plan an old fashioned picnic.
