The Derby Silk Mill was probably the first factory in England, if not the world. The word ‘mill’ is now often used to mean ‘textile factory’. This is because the Derby silk mills and their successors in the 1700s were all water – powered, like many earlier corn mills. They also shared the centralisation of production and a large investment of money in labour saving machinery.
