In the 1840s more than 20,000 signatures were on a petition to Government seeking improvement on pay and working conditions for framework knitters. The Government set up a wide-ranging enquiry, during which several hundred knitters gave evidence. This is the testimony of Samuel Parker, one of twelve Ruddington residents who were questioned. The final report gives detailed information on almost every aspect of the lives of framework knitters and their families, but it did not result in any Government intervention.
