The establishment of one of Nottingham’s most prominent landmarks as the first public museum and gallery outside of London in the late Victorian period is a topic worthy of some study purely on its historical merits. For further information read Castle General History (30 kb)
This topic touches on issues of development, art and its value to society, education, work and leisure and lends itself beautifully to a cross curricular approach incorporating National Curriculum objectives for Key Stage 2 from History, Geography, Science, Art, DT and Music.
While any visit to the Castle is a worthwhile experience in itself, by centering it in a study of the Victorian period it enables children to gain a stronger understanding in many aspects of life in nineteenth century Nottingham and how these still impact upon us today through the Castle, its works and place within the city.
