The establishment of one of Nottingham’s most prominent landmarks as the first public museum and gallery outside of London in the late Victorian period is a topic worthy of some study purely on its historical merits. For further information read Castle General History (30 kb) [doc]

This topic touches on issues of development, art and its value to society, education, work and leisure and lends itself beautifully to a cross curricular approach incorporating National Curriculum objectives for Key Stage 2 from History, Geography, Science, Art, DT and Music.

While any visit to the Castle is a worthwhile experience in itself, by centering it in a study of the Victorian period it enables children to gain a stronger understanding in many aspects of life in nineteenth century Nottingham and how these still impact upon us today through the Castle, its works and place within the city.
