These are silver shilling coins. All coins in The Elizabethan period were silver or gold. These coins were produced or ‘minted’ in the Tower of London. Coins like these would have passed through many hands before being paid to Robert Redhyll at Wollaton Hall. Robert Redhyll was paid two shillings just like these for 12 long hard days’ work in the kitchens at Wollaton Hall. Most servants earned between £2 and £5 per year, that’s 40 to 100 shillings.
