People in Northampton have been making shoes by hand for over 700 years. This 1866 print shows a Northampton shoemaker and his wife in their workshop at home. The shoemaker is attaching the sole to a shoe and his wife is sewing the uppers. It would have taken him around 7 years to learn the craft.
