Polish section - Newark Cemetery (1)This is a flexible resource that enables teachers to use all or some of the activities, and to adapt the package to the needs of their students.

Activities can be teacher-led, delivered to a whole class using electronic whiteboards, or can be used with groups and individual students as part of their independent learning.

Curriculum Links

The focus of the activities is on encouraging students to develop their historical enquiry and interpretation skills. By interrogating images, documents and related resources, students will be able to make judgements about the benefits and limitations of particular sources for historical research.

Activity 2 also aims to support language across the curriculum, examining style conventions for non-fiction writing.

Activities

Use this timeline,Background - 1941 (25 kb) [doc], to give students an overview of the world situation in 1941. Explain that the following activities will help them appreciate the local impact of the war on people's lives.

 

 

Activity 1 (21 kb) [doc]

Learning objectives:

  • students will increase their visual literacy and questioning skills
  • students will evaluate pictures as historical sources
  • students will communicate their opinions to the class

A visual literacy / questioning activity that can be used as a warm-up or starter activity on an interactive whiteboard. Consider using the whiteboard to mask portions of the images, revealing more as students develop their questions.

Learning objectives:

  • students will use diaries to find historical information
  • students will make judgements on the usefulness of different sources for historic enquiry
  • students will develop skills in non-fiction writing to present historical information
