Pupils enjoy the gem panning activity at the National Stone Centre but there is insufficient time during a busy visit to find out much about the gems. These activities aim to enable pupils to satisfy their curiosity about the gems they found by using them in activities that will meet National Curriculum objectives.

Activity 1 - sorting gems
Learning objectives
· to group materials together and make a record of groupings
· that materials can be sorted in a variety of ways according to their properties

This activity uses minerals found during the gem panning activity to encourage discussion and grouping according to their properties.
Activity 2 – matching gems to description
Learning objectives
· that objects can be identified from key words
This activity develops pupils ability to identify minerals by using appropriate adjectives.
