Calcite is a common mineral found in limestone rock and in most sea shells. It dissolves in water. It is a fairly soft mineral (3 on Mohs scale) that can be scratched with a copper coin. It can be white or colourless but is sometimes red, green or yellow. It is transparent or translucent.
