This image is from a postcard photograph in the collection at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The photograph has been coloured to show how a lion statue in the Arboretum may have looked following an act of vandalism in the early 1900's. A family story, known by the Mitton family today, says that apprentices from Clayton and Shuttleworths painted the lion with stripes to make it look like a tiger! The story says that the company tried to cover up this 'scandal'. Herbert Mitton was in charge of the apprentices at the time.
