Museum staff-led visits.


Museum staff offer hands-on and active education sessions in a variety of curriculum areas:

  • The Romans (KS1/2)
  • The 1950s (KS1/2)
  • Toys Through Time (KS2)

  • Portraits "Putting you in the Picture"
  • Looking at Landscapes
  • Town tours (KS1/2)

These free sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of your class, please ring to discuss your specific requirements and book a staff-led session.

 

Living History Workshops


The museum often holds living history days connected to National Curriculum programmes of study such as Romans, Celts, Saxons, Vikings, Tudors and Victorians. These re-enactor led sessions bring history to life. The pupils meet characters who have "come from the past" and experience a range of hands-on activities. Workshops are charged for by half or full day and cost between £2 and £3.50 per child. Teacher-led visits

Independent visits to see the temporary and permanent exhibitions are free to all schools. Please book in advance.

Outreach

The museum staff can also visit your school for an artefact handling session covering many National Curriculum subjects. Please contact the museum for current charging information or to book an off-site visit.

Loan Boxes

There are a number of loan boxes suitable for KS1 and KS2 that can be borrowed for a half term, covering a variety of curriculum subjects. Schools must pick up and return loan boxes. Please contact the museum for current charging information or to book a box.

Access and Facilities

The museum is on two levels but has a lift available. It also has fully accessible toilets and a shop which sells a range of educational resources, gifts, cards and books. The entrance to the gallery is ramped and all the displays are on one floor. The garden is fully accessible to all.

The museum and art gallery are open 9.30am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday although some visits can be arranged for Mondays and evenings.

The museum and gallery can only accommodate groups of up to 40 children at any one time. Teachers remain responsible for their groups at all times and are advised to carry out their own risk assessment before a class visit.
