Figure of Eight cuffs were also known as “Irish Eight” as they were often used in Ireland. According the chairman of the Haitt company, who still make restraints today, Figure-8 cuffs were the first issued to the Metropolitan Police of London in about 1832. Stamped FROGGATT.
An 1830 Directory of Warwickshire lists William Froggatt of Birmingham as a manufacturer of dog and horse colloars and felon's iron maker. The company stayed within the Froggatt family through to 1937 when it was sold to their major competitor, Haitt.
