The Lancaster or the Mighty Lanc as it was nicknamed by some of the bomber crews who manned her was the most successful bomber used by the RAF with the ability to carry large loads at speed for long distances that no other aircraft of the day could match.

Loading bombs into a Lancaster BomberOver 7,000 Lancasters were built and flown during the Second World War but today only 2 are still airworthy – one of these is part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight stationed at RAF Coningsby.

Using a selection of images and artefacts on display at the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor centre, this classroom-based, cross-curricular project for Key Stage 2/3, looks at the story of the Lancaster, its crew and the role it played during the Second World war. It supports the teaching of History with links to Citizenship, Literacy and ICT and contains a range of information, lesson ideas and resources in formats suitable for web-based, offline and IWB use.
